Annual Alsup Voice Award Competition Scheduled

The annual Alsup Voice Award Competition will take place on Monday, April 2, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Presser Recital Hall on the campus of Louisiana College. Dr. Loryn Frey, Chair of the Division of Visual and Performing Arts explains, “The Alsup competition has been held at LC since its inception in 1972.” Frey continues, “The event was established by Mrs. Helen Rougeau in memory of a former Louisiana College professor N. C. Alsup as a means of encouraging vocal excellence among the students in the Department of Music at LC.”

This year’s singers and accompanists include:

Sarah Dodson, Soprano and Daniel Hill, Pianist
Sarah Aupied, Soprano and Patricia Sandlin, Pianist
Lee Anne Monroe, Soprano and Daniel Hill Pianist
Joseph Cole, Tenor and Patricia Sandlin, Pianist
Juliette Wells, Soprano and Fred Graham, Pianist
Julie Thiels, Soprano and Patricia Sandlin, Pianist
Hannah Arabie, Soprano and Patricia Sandlin, Pianist
Victoria Lindo, Soprano and Patricia Sandlin, Pianist

The competition will be judged by Shawn Roy, the Director of Opera and Voice Instructor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s School of Music. Mr. Roy has performed professionally in Opera and musical theater throughout the U.S. and abroad. Among his many accomplishments, Roy has performed with such companies as the New York City Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Cleveland Opera among many others. Roy is also well versed in Musical Theater appearing in some of the most well-known musicals including, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, and 1776! Most recently, Roy appeared with the Acadiana Symphony in A Night at the Opera.

Annual Juried Art Student Competition Opens

The annual juried art student competition opens on Thursday, March 22nd and will run through April 19, 2007. The opening reception is Thursday March 22nd from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the students at the reception.

The juror for this year’s show is Leslie Groesback, Gallery Coordinator at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The purpose of the show is to prepare LC art students on how to participate in professional art shows and galleries.

The annual juried art student competition will take place in the Weathersby Fine Art building on the campus of Louisiana College. The community is invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday, March 22nd at 6 p.m. and to view the exhibit.

Louisianians to Present Spring Concert

The annual spring Louisianians concert will be held on Monday, March 26, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Presser Recital Hall on the campus of Louisiana College. Dr. Cleamon Downs will conduct and Jerry Cauley is the accompanist.

This year’s concert will feature compositions by Dr. Mark Schweizer, guest composer for the spring semester. Dr. Schweizer taught in the Louisiana College music department for seven years and is currently the Director of Music at First Christian Church in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Schweizer is also the President of the Saint James Music Press.

Two graduating seniors and singers in the Louisianians, Paul Hand and Dustin Royer, will contribute original verses for the traditional singing of “Vive L’Amour”.

The Louisiana College Zeta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma inducted new members

The Louisiana College Zeta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, a national foreign language honor society, held an induction ceremony on Tuesday, March 13th for new members.

Inductees as associate members include: Kara Blanton of Shelby, NC.; Kelli Brasher of Pineville, LC.; Marie Champagne of Breaux Bridge, LA.; Blake Gardner of New Boston, TX; and Rachael Melancon of Lafayette, LA.

In order to be a member of Alpha Mu Gamma, students must exhibit exceptional performance in foreign language, as well as, maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

Louisiana College Debate Team participated in Florida debate tournament

Two Louisiana College novice debaters tied for third place in their division of the Marks Invitational Debate Tournament hosted by the University of West Florida in Pensacola on March 2nd – 4th.

Rachael Melancon, a Lafayette freshman, and Kris Lee, a Shreveport sophomore, both moved to the semi-final round from the preliminary debates. Melancon dropped her round on a 2-1 decision to Mallory Bonnette of Louisiana Tech University, while Lee lost 2-1 to Rani Cooper of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Melancon was ranked as the top speaker in the novice division. Lee is a recent member of the Debate squad, and he is also the quarterback for the Wildcat Football team.

The LC varsity division entries did not advance from the six preliminary rounds. Representing LC were Ethan Boothe, a Harrisonburg sophomore; Jeffery Boystun, a Dry Prong sophomore; Allison Steed, a Pearl River sophomore and Haley Treas, a Sulpher senior.

Louisiana College placed fourth among the schools participating.
