Smith Scholarship at Louisiana College is Awarded to Natchitoches Student

Pineville, LA. …. The Louisiana College Office of Admissions is proud to announce the winner of the annual Clyde and Elizabeth Smith Scholarship Competition that was held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 on the campus of Louisiana College.

Steven Riley Niette of Natchitoches, Louisiana, a senior at the Louisiana School for the Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches, is the 2008 winner of the Clyde and Elizabeth Smith Scholarship Competition. Steven is the son of Doris & Dan Whatley of Natchitoches and Gary Niette of Campti.  His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Herbert (Buzz) Salard of Natchitoches, Mrs. Vergie Carnline of Spanish Lake, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Whatley of Alexandria. Steven has a perfect 4.0 GPA and scored a 32 on the ACT. He has decided to double major in Christian Studies and Pre-Law.

The Smith Scholarship provides for full tuition, room and board, and textbooks for four years at Louisiana College. The thirty-one other competition finalists will receive tuition scholarships in the amount of $32,000 each.

Piano competition deadline February 1, 2008

Pineville, LA…Louisiana College and the Pineville Kiwanis Club are sponsoring a newly formatted Caudell Cup Piano Competition for 2008 to be held Saturday, March 1st, in Presser Recital Hall. First Prize is $500 and the Caudell Cup. Second prize is $300 and third prize is $200.

The competition is open to pianists of any nationality enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program in the state of Louisiana at the time of the competition.

Applications should be postmarked not later than February 1, 2008. A non-refundable application fee of $25 must be included with each application. Checks may be payable to Louisiana College.

Repertoire requirements: Two pieces of contrasting styles from advanced standard piano solo repertoire (no concertos). Both pieces must be performed from memory.

Travel expenses to and from Alexandria/Pineville are the responsibility of the contestants.

The Jury’s decisions are final and not subject to review.

The first prize winner will perform a 20 minute program for the Pineville Kiwanis Club at noon on one Tuesday of the spring 2008. Travel expenses will be covered for and lunch will be provided.

Excellence in the Arts competition to be held February 9th

Pineville, LA The annual Louisiana College Excellence in the Arts competition will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Weathersby Fine Arts Building on the campus of Louisiana College. During the competition, high school seniors will compete for up to fifteen four- year scholarships; five each in Music, Art and Theater. 

The Excellence in the Arts competition is open to any high school senior that plans to enter Louisiana College in the fall semester and major in Music, Art or Theater.  The competition will consist of auditions for music and theater, and interview/presentation of portfolios for art.

Immediately following the competition, participants, along with their parents, will be honored at a luncheon where award winners will be announced.

Winning students will receive their scholarships upon being admitted to Louisiana College.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown

 Pineville, LA…Tickets are now on sale for Theatre Louisiana College’s performance of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”.  Opening night will be Thursday, February 7th; doors open at 7:00 p.m. and curtain is at 7:30.

Additional evening performances will be February 8, 9 and 14-16. 

Matinee performances will be held Sunday, Feb. 10th & 17th at 2:30p.m.

Reservations may be made by phone: 487-7495 or at the tlc box office in the Martin Performing Arts Center (rm. 207) on the LC campus. Phone reservations will be confirmed.
