SNA announces winners of Wildcat Run

Jennifer Thorpe and Curt Bertrand overall 5K winners



Pineville, LA…Louisiana College Student Nurses Association (SNA) announces the winners of the 2009 Wildcat Run that was held on the Louisiana College campus March 28. Overall male winner of the 5K race was Curt Bertrand with a time of 18:51.  Overall female winner was Jennifer Thorpe, with a time of 24:54.  First place in the 1 Mile Run was Jeffrey Aycock with a time of 6:33. First place in the 5K Walk was Word Lindsey. Second place in 5K Walk was Michael Hall.


The Annual SNA Wildcat Walk/Run is held on campus to raise money for the Student Nurses Association operating fund and also for scholarship money. The LC SNA would like to thank all who participated and/or contributed to this major fundraising event.









Phi Alpha Inducts Three New Members

Pineville, LA… The Louisiana College Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society recently inducted three new members during a March 19th ceremony. Those inducted were:  Sara Rush of Deville, LA, Rachel Tillman of Bastrop, LA and Lindsey Willis of Shreveport, LA.


Phi Alpha Honor Society is the national social work honor society which has been in existence since 1962.  The Louisiana College chapter of Phi Alpha, Epsilon Sigma, has been in existence since the fall of 1995.  The honor society recognizes scholastic excellence and achievement in social work.  In order to be eligible for membership, students must have declared social work as a major, achieved sophomore status, completed nine hours of required social work classes, and attained an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and a GPA of 3.25 in required social work classes.


Debate results from UCA tournament

Pineville, LA The Louisiana College debate team was in action over the weekend at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas.  Advancing to double octo-finalist in the Novice division was freshmen, Dustin Carter and Ashley Dufrene and sophomore, Jesus Carrillo.  Advancing to octo-finalist in the Novice division were freshman, Amanda Graves and junior, Courtney Hamilton.  Senior debater, Kris Lee, advanced to semi finalist in varsity debate, as well as being selected 4th speaker overall.  April 3-5, the debate team will travel to Bossier City to compete in the National tournament at Bossier Parish Community College.

Pineville, LA The Louisiana College debate team recently returned from a tournament at Henderson State University in Arkansas where LC took Sweepstakes for overall performance. They were 3rd out of about 10 schools that entered from Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Florida, and Mississippi. Two debate team members placed in the novice division and one in the varsity.  Freshman, Dustin Carter, was awarded 5th speaker overall in his division and Victory Greenhouse won 4th place speaker in the same division.  Additionally, in the varsity division, sophomore, Lucas Moncada, advanced to octo- finalist.

Last weekend, the debate team competed in a tournament at LSU-Alexandria, where senior, Kris Lee, and junior, Eric Puckett, competed in team debate and freshman, Stephanie Baer, competed and placed 3rd in two individual events: impromptu speaking and persuasive speaking.  In the novice division, junior, Courtney Hamilton finished as a semi-finalist and freshman, Travis Kiewer, finished as an octo-finalist. In varsity debate, Kris Lee advanced to octo-finalist and Lucas Moncada won 5th speaker in the division.    

Next week, the LC debate team will compete at the University of Central Arkansas and then wrap up the semester at the National Tournament at LSU-Shreveport the first weekend of April. 





Guest/Faculty Recital

Pineville, LA…Louisiana College Department of Music will host a guest/faculty recital on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 3:00 p.m., in Presser Recital Hall of the Weathersby fine Arts Building.  Performing on saxophone will be Mr. Scott Topazi, along with Louisiana College Artist in Residence, Ms. Mei-En Chou, on the piano.  Mr. Topazi studied at the University of Alabama from 2003 to 2006 where he graduated with honors in Music Technology. While there, he also studied piano and clarinet. From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Topazi studied at the University of North Texas, Denton, where he received a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance with a related field in Music Theory. While at UNT, he participated in four saxophone quartets and was part of the Symphonic Band as well. Sunday’s recital will feature a repertoire including: Ida Gotkovsky, Jindrich Feld, Paule Maurice, and Robert Muczynski. The recital is open to the public free of charge.
