ASC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees

Team Together to Raise $8,138.88 for Charity

RICHARDSON, Texas — Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from the 15 American Southwest Conference campuses combined to raise $8,138.88 for local community organizations in the second annual “Make a Change in 14 Days” loose coin campaign.

Fifteen different organizations received support through the local campus fundraising efforts held from January 29-February 9. Included was the Alpine (Texas) Public Library, American Cancer Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brownwood (Texas), Boys & Girls Club of Marshall (Texas), Cabrini Cancer Center, Children’s Miracle Network, Doyle Community Center, Guadalupe Valley Electrical Cooperative, Habitat for Humanity, Hope’s Door of Plano (Texas), Johnson County (Arkansas) Girls Club, Rapides Regional Life Center, Special Olympics, Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The family of paralyzed Concordia University Texas baseball player Garrett Williamson also received support.

“The student-athletes, working through their campus SAAC groups, have displayed great enthusiasm toward community involvement on the local level,” ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton said. “This year’s Make a Change in 14 Days campaign far exceeded the goal set by the Conference SAAC and will have an impact in each of the 15 ASC member communities now and in the future.”

In the two years of the conference-wide campaign, over $10,000 has been raised to benefit 24 different charities.

“The Conference SAAC has taken the Make a Change in 14 Days project to heart, and it has quickly become a targeted event on each campus,” added Carlton. “I am very proud of the student-athletes and the SAAC officers and advisors for being leaders on campus and in the community. And I also thank the great fans of the ASC member schools for their support of the community fundraising project.”

The two-week SAAC event is also designed as a challenge among the member campuses and is scheduled during the turn of the conference basketball season. The division pool of Louisiana College, Mississippi College, LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University claimed the 2008 campaign title with a combined collection of $3,845.87.

Louisiana College, located in Pineville, La., was the top-collecting ASC institution, raising $3,323.81. LC chose to split its donations between Cabrini Cancer Center and Rapides Regional Life Center, both of which focus on breast cancer treatment.

“Everyone getting involved was great,” said Louisiana College SAAC President McCaslin Carson, a junior softball player. “It makes us feel really good, not just to win (the challenge) but more to know what we did for breast cancer treatment. We were very motivated to help.”

Louisiana College first-year women’s basketball head coach Janice Joseph-Richard, also a former all-American at LC, is a breast cancer survivor. Carson said that prompted their SAAC group to tie in the Make a Change in 14 Days project with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s “Think Pink” breast cancer awareness campaign. The bulk of the donations were collected during the free admission “Fill the Fieldhouse” night at H.O. West Fieldhouse on February 7 as the Wildcats took on LeTourneau in conference basketball action.

“It was exciting because the women’s basketball team really got into it,” Carson said. “After their game, they helped pass the buckets around and give away T-shirts. There were tons of people here - and most were wearing pink, too. We had a blast doing it.”
