LC Announces Groundbreaking for New Football/Soccer Stadium

July 22nd, 2008

Pineville, LA.The Louisiana College Department of Athletics is proud to announce the groundbreaking for the Wildcat Football/Soccer Stadium on Thursday, July 24th at 10 a.m. on the current soccer field behind the tennis courts on the campus of LC.

“This is a day we have all been waiting for,” explained Wildcat Football Head Coach Dennis Dunn. “To be able to play on a field of this quality will be an exciting and rewarding experience for our athletes.”

Louisiana College is no stranger to football, the first program began in 1907 and continued through January 1969. During that time the LC football team, cheerleaders and marching band were a fixture at school events and community parades and played against nearly all the universities in the state.

In 2000, Football was revived at Louisiana College and since that time the team has been playing home games at Pineville High School. “Although, Pineville High School stadium has been an incredible place to play our games, we are looking forward to playing football games on our campus for our players and students,” said Dunn.

Coach Dunn not only sees the stadium as a boon for the football and soccer teams, but he also predicts that the field and stadium will be a huge asset to the Cities of Pineville and Alexandria and all of central Louisiana. “The new field will be state-of-the art, meaning we can use it for athletics, as well as, band/cheerleading/dance line camps and competitions, sports tournaments and community events like graduations.”

Of course the stadium is not just for football; Louisiana College has men’s and women’s soccer teams. The soccer program at LC began in the fall of 1997 and the teams will benefit from practicing and playing on the new field. “When completed, this stadium will be one of the best, if not the best soccer stadium in the state of Louisiana,” explained Head Soccer Coach Derek Godwin. “This will be incredible for recruiting new soccer players to LC.”

Coach Godwin agrees with Coach Dunn that the new field and stadium will be an incredible asset to the school by allowing the school to put in bids to host state-wide high school soccer finals and even bring in professional soccer games.

The stadium project totals approximately $8 million and will be completed in three phases:

Phase one - A new turf field and stadium seating for 7,000 will be installed.

The first phase is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2008 Homecoming game against Howard Payne University on October 25th.

Phase two - Completion of a brick façade surrounding the bleachers. This area will include concession areas, home-side and visitor restrooms, and a press box, press suite and donor suite that will be accessible by elevator.

Phase three - Completion of a three-story athletic/academic building that will house the athletic training program including classrooms, offices, locker rooms, weight and training facilities and meeting rooms.

“We invite everyone in our community to this groundbreaking because the new field and stadium will be a facility that all of central Louisiana can be proud of,” said Dr. Joe Aguillard, President of Louisiana College. We are all extremely excited and we look forward to playing the Homecoming game in October on our new field.”
